What is Autism Saanich?

Autism Saanich is a group that brings together parents of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, especially those in British Columbia's School District 63 (Saanich Schools). What students with ASD experience at school, whether positive or negative, greatly affects the emotional state of  the whole family. So by sharing information and perspectives, our goal is to help our children, their schools, and one another.

We meet once a month throughout the school year. Some meetings feature talks by invited guests, while others give parents the opportunity to socialize, share experiences and network with one another. Meetings with guest speakers are open to all, and offer a chance for educators and parents to gather for the benefit of students with ASD.

From time to time we also have informal social events for families, to allow parents and kids, both those with autism and their typically developing siblings, to get together.

Our Mission

Autism Saanich seeks to work for the benefit of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, their parents, and the educators who work with them in Saanich Schools, while raising awareness about autism in the wider community.

Words to ponder:

"These children often show a surprising sensitivity to the personality of the teacher. However difficult they are, even under optimal conditions, they can be guided and taught, but only by those who give them understanding and genuine affection, people who show kindness towards them and yes, humour. The teacher’s underlying emotional attitude influences, involuntarily and unconsciously, the mood and behaviour of the child. Of course, the management and guidance of such children essentially requires a proper knowledge of their peculiarities as well as genuine pedagogic talent and experience. Mere teaching efficiency is not enough."
